View Full Version : Spring ride 2008
Sorry for the delay in getting this out. At the 10/10 meeting, several of the Spring Ride veterans and Charter riders were discussing some 2008 possibilities and I'm including them for your review and suggestions so we can start putting some things in place for people to pick their vacation time for 2008. The suggestion was made to scale back by a day or two to 6 or 7 days. I made a suggestion that we look at 7 days along with a Monday (Memorial Day) departure which would allow some folks to use that holiday for travel. In the past, we avoided that day because it is sometimes a heavily traveled holiday. My impression would be that it's not prohibitive and we could make use of the day.
As for destinations or extended stay locations, we talked about the Dragon as a destination, along with VA/WV and the areas we've ridden there already (ie Seneca Rocks, Green Bank, etc.) and, again, Ocean City (the observation that we've always had a great time was refuted by one of the Charter Members (and we can only GUESS who that might be (let's see, who rode back from there on an air mattress??))). The Ozarks got high marks from everyone who rode them, but I think a return visit there would be in another future year and not 2008.
I guess we'd like to see this thread develop our discussion of these items and lead to more items being placed on the table for discussion so somebody start the ball (or wheels) rolling!
Still not sure if I can get the time off, although I will give it my best shot.
I guess if we're talking about scaling back then a trip to Key West is out?

Eric,
I'd say that Key West at over 3200 miles rt is a minimum 8 dayer given our riding style and parameters. I know we'd lose riders if we made that our destination. A nice ride from Miami or a flight from Syracuse, though!:)
Yeah, I figured as much. Personally I wouldn't mind making the Dragon and shooting back up the coast as in years prior.
Any chance the guys from Ottawa will be making the trip this year?

Hey Guys and Gals, nice of you to think of us for the Spring Ride, I'll pass it on to the other boys in Ottawa and hopefully we can attend the trip. As far as suggestions, we'll leave it to you guys.... Thanks for the invite.
JP,
Lest there be any confusion, be it metric or whatever, our Canadian riders should be aware that the Guns 'n Hoses Christmas Party (JP, ya have Christmas up there, eh??) is on 12/12 at the Turners' Club, 613 N. Salina St. Peter should be able to give directions. You don't have to ride to it, but you can if you want, eh? Now where's those other 5 riders, eh? And be sure to tell Holly, eh? After all, it's Christmas (eh?)! And wear yer shirts!
And while you're thinking aboot it, our November meeting is 11/11. You could use the meeting practice!

I got back from the Dragon run a couple of weeks ago. I also have maps of Shenandoah Mountain Parkway (105 miles long) and Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway (470 miles long) and info on Wheels Through Time Museum. Total mileage for me was 2400 miles (a little side trip into Georgia). Let me know if anyone would like to see the information.
Kurt
I'm throwing this out for consideration. I've laid out a 7 day ride which includes the following;
1st night - Cumberland, MD Lunch stop in Bald Eagle State Park, PA
2nd night - Bluefield, WV Lunch stop in either Stonewall Jackson or Holly River State Park (WV) and more outstanding WV roads!
3rd night - Asseville, NC Our 2 day stop in Asseville would give us a chance to ride the Biltmore and the Dragon.
4th night - Asseville, NC
5th night - Dayton, OH
6th night - Toronto, ON
7th night - Ottawa, ON
Miles=2180
We could leave on Memorial Day (Monday) and any of our Canadian G 'n H riders could come down on Sunday (after all, Memorial Day means nothing to them). Any thoughts??
Bill:
I like it. Would you go to Toronto via Detroit or back through NY?
Also, anyone with concerns about time could make it a 7 dayer and head back to the Cuse from Toronto.
-eric
via Detroit and then to Ottawa by TC-7 (the scenic route).

Don't forget your Pass Ports
Don't forget your Pass Ports
None needed. See below.
LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website (http://www.dhs.gov/xnews/releases/pr_1182350422171.shtm).
JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html#compliant_document), or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.
SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.
The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.
wondering if we have made any progress on finding places to stay.
I have Asheville and Ottawa done. Need Cumberland, MD, Bluefield, WV, Dayton, OH and Toronto. Bear with me, I'm busy wrenching!

Bill, et al
Snafus and conumdrums. . .all in the spirit of wanting to do eveything at once. I just got back from the US Open Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas. While there, I was assigned to ref at the University World Team Trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, May 21-24. I'll ride out to Colorado leaving on the 19th or 20th. So on the front end of the Spring Ride, I will try to hook up with you folks on my ride back east. What dates will you be in Asheville? I'll leave Colorado on the 25th and can meet up with you all on either the 27th or 28th, where ever you are. On the back end, I need to be in Binghamton for the North East Regionals on the 31st. Where will we be on the 29th or the 30th? Depending on distance, I'll break off on one of those dates and fire over to Binghamton to put in an appearance (the event is 30th-1st but as long as I'm there for a full day on the 1st, that will be enough). It looks like I'll have to pass on the Canada connection. Is all this doable for rooming purposes? If I'm creating too much of a headache, let me know but I would like to Spring Ride at least a few days with ya'll.
Wayne
All right, you l*bs, I need to know who will be with us when! I got Docs dates. Still need Gary, Mike D, I think everyone else is in for the long haul! Give me a call and let me know as I'm trying to assemble the roomies sheet (I know we're very late this year. . . I'm going to turn you all into Hannas!)
Cinco de Mayo, yeah!
Doc,
5/26 Cumberland, MD
5/27 Bluefield, WV
5/28 Asseville, NC
5/29 Ditto
5/30 Dayton, OH
5/31 Toronto, ONT
6/01 Ottawa, ONT
Let me know what works for you. I'm presuming the dates in fuchsia would work. This rooming list is beginning to look like a puzzle!
