There was talk about trying gmrs radios on our trips. Sams Club in great northern area has a set of Two Sx 710's 12 mile range (line of sight) with ni/cad bat. ear bud remote mic. They were under $50. These also have more privacy codes. and a weather channel

I am still looking for info that Billy Hanna sent me on a small company that made headsets with push to talk (ptt) and noise canceling mikes for bike use. I will keep looking.

Just looked through the Bass Pro Shops circular in today's mail. They have Midland GXT500VP4 radios advertised for $79.88/pair with a $10 mail in rebate (total 69.88/pair). Range 14 miles. Comes with DC charger, earpiece w/boom mike. 22 channels/ 38 privacy codes/ 5 watts/ NOAA weather.
They also advertise Frog Togg's rainsuits and gore-tex rainsuits in larger sizes.

Bill,
Any sense of how this would integrate with the Autocom unit?

Wayne,
With the 2 prong plug cable from autocom, it just plugs in. Did you buy the cable?

Top, would going in on a set with someone else suffice? Do they come with two boom mics and ear plugs? I really don't need two radios. Red Bull

Bill,
I don't think I have the cable but it would be easy to get including a splitter if that is necessary. I have the GPS and the phone lines hooked into the Active-7. I think there is additional patch in space or do I just have to share the plug with the phone jack? If this just plugs into my existing sound system, I do not need a boom or headset so sharing a set would make sense.

Doc,
Under your seat, there should be a plugin cord like to your helmet, but mine has a grey boot on it. It's a DIN connector that the radio interface cable plugs into. I think I have the part numbers somewhere. I'll look. It should be a very simple deal. Is the DIN plug a 5 or 7 pin? I think they may have changed since I bought the Pro M-1 AutoCom. You might also try calling Top Gear in Slingerlands and ask for Meredith. She'll have the info.

RB,
That depends on whether you want to talk to someone else or to your self??:D Presumably, someone else, in which case, you can go in with someone else. I'm going to call a company called Sierra Electronics, which seems to be at the lead in this area. Will post updates.
Are we going with these or not.If so Dicks Sporting goods has them on sale.(SX710).Lets make a decision and who or who are not using them. J.J.

JJ,
That's what we'll be using. FRS/GMRS radios are pretty standard as for the channels, it's the distance (claims) that differ.

Hey JJ, your kinda crotchety don't you think? This isn't a ride for mental heath inmates out for a Sunday tour. This is a ride for super intellectual, funseeking great looking cowpokes like my self. Easy boy! Just settle in, grip the harness reins very tightly and when the gate opens "let her rip". Yee ha! :D Red Bull

Top, I wouldn't know anything about Brokeback mountain, since I have never been there nor would I spend one thin dime on seeing the movie. However, it would appear that you do have some knowledge. Hmm. Red Bull
